The marimba belongs to the xylophone family (xylo: from Greek, meaning wood) and comes directly from the first musical instruments which appeared on our planet. Different types of xylophones can be found all over the world: in Africa, in America and even in Asia (Laos, Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam etc.)

The name marimba comes from (or limba), which generally means in certain African Bantu ethnic languages: "flat object which projects itself ". The marimba is , therefore, an instrument made with lots of (notes). The African terminology is in conflict with the sense given to the word marimba by the occidental musicologists of the early 20th century. The latter tended to call all African xylophones. NEXT >
