It is during the pre-Colombian period, one supposes, that the xylophone was introduced to Latin America with calabash as resonators. Others believe that it was the African slaves who, hundreds of years later, introduced their traditional wooden slatted instruments to this continent.

In Mexico and Guatemala, the marimba is the national instrument. The first truly chromatic marimba with a double keyboard was elaborated in Guatemala by Sebastian Hurtado in 1894. NEXT >
